Today is the birthday of the Caban Group of Companies. On 1 March 2013 Caban Investments Ltd in Cape Town South Africa was officially launched. While going through the archives we spent some time having a look back at our social media from the time. As a company we have embraced social media fully and have through the networking possibility of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter met many business associates who have become friends and we thought that on this special day we share some of the early posts with you. The Facebook post on our launch date, 1 March 2013, is especially relevant and certainly a trait that is found in those that work within the group - the Cabanites. As Cabanites we often turn our tenacious natures towards helping others as is evident in our Community Investment Companies and the work we do with NPO's such as the Atlantis…

In Mayan times, the Ceiba was a highly celebrated tree – much as the African Baobab is to the ancient African tribes. The Ceiba was thought to be a link to the various celestial planes with its roots sinking deep into the earth and its branches reaching into the heavens. The Ceiba also represents the four cardinal points – North, South, East and West. This gives the mythical Ceiba a comprehensive view of all around it. Born out of the authentic reputation and distinctive style of the mystical tree, Ceiba Media (Pty) Ltd (known as Ceiba) delivers consistently across an expanding number of innovative and creative services, brands and diverse market segments, including a comprehensive understanding of new marketing services and high-end consumer solutions. The Caban Community Investment Company (CIC) concept stems from the very real and urgent need to create opportunities for those who, most often due to situations that they cannot control, are not able to follow through with their dreams of being an entrepreneur who in turn create job opportunities. Over the past two years we have attracted a number of suitable partners. StrandHanson have partnered with us with the Atlantis Dream Team and Qei Holdings, a partnership we are now strengthening. At present we already have three CIC’s registered as special purpose vehicles: Qinisanani Investments in Khayelitsha; Qei Holdings in Atlantis in the Western Cape and; Mgcawu Holdings in Upington in the Northern Cape. This business model is not a CSI programme, rather we believe in creating sustainable solutions for communities utilising proper business principles. The creation of a CIC facilitates this process. It works as follows: A public unlisted…

Caban’s journey with Salesians Life Choices began after our Group CEO, Dave Romero, delivered a speech on creating sustainable NGO’s at a NGO financing summit in 2014. It is a strong and long standing passion of Dave’s that NPOs and NGOs should not be going to the government and corporate SA with their caps in hand asking for funding to continue with the good work that they are doing. At the core of his speech was the suggestion that the NGO sector should seriously consider using their access to communities and upstanding position they have in society to create opportunities for entrepreneurs to thrive by working with industry experts to create business incubation programmes. Through the application of the Caban business model (or a similar iteration) they would be able to acquire equity in the businesses they incubate and begin to create a pipeline for future income either through the…

This company will maintain Caban's ethos of doing business; creating jobs, assisting communities and achieving above 40% return on investment. A highly experienced team has been put together which Caban will complement with its strong corporate finance team. As a founding member with a 33.3% stake in the venture, Caban’s involvement will concentrate on the provision of corporate finance expertise together with all the Caban services. The Caban executive will be involved in the strategic direction of the…

The TodPod is a 3 in 1 multi-functional toddler bag that converts into a table and chair for children. It has been designed as an activity station to ease everyday life for families with children - inside as well as outside the home. While sitting in church one Sunday, Jared noticed the toddlers getting bored, irritable and obviously uninterested while distracting their parents. The desire to believe that things can be better for parent and child was a primary motivator for action. What if I could keep them occupied, safely and comfortably seated with their books, toys and crayons within easy reach? thought Jared. This was the beginning of an incredible adventure. The TodPod was born – Your Toddler’s Best Friend. One simple bag to carry toys, colouring books, crayons, play dough etc, and VIOLA, believe it or not, the bag can quickly and easily be converted into a table…

The ever growing concern of water scarcity in Southern Africa and the rest of Africa is a major challenge and is placing increasing strain on an already limited supply of usable water. The cost of clean water is up as is the pressure is on the tourism industry to be custodians of the environment that enables their business. Aqua4Life took a practical approach to these challenges and offered the bush lodges a solution that not only saves them money but also adds value to the overall experience of their guests. Using a combination of Aqua4Life water filters and custom designed and branded water bottles the lodges were able to totally eliminate the need for plastic water bottles on game drives and in the rooms. And the water quality was better. We have reports back from two lodges - the Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge and the Virgin owned Ulusaba Lodges…

The vote to leave the EU last week has certainly caused a host of whispers and rumours on what will happen now. The fact is that until the UK Government decides exactly what they want to do with the recommendation that is the Referendum outcome, there will be few certainties and for many entrepreneurs it will be business as usual. It might be worthwhile at this time to consider some of the positives for SME's in the UK. The majority of regulation and under which early stages businesses work, especially from a financial perspective, will roughly remain the same. Crowdfunding and P2P lending for instance in the UK operates under specific UK regulation with less reference to the EU and mechanically it is UK investors and UK borrowers and so there will be little disruption. The Financial Conduct Authority in the UK has been enormously innovative as well as rigorous…

The TODPOD campaign is not only set to make history with this flagship product but poised to break the Indiegogo record for the most funds successfully raised. Jared Pillai, founder of Million Baby and Inventor of the TodPod has this to say about his product. “We can measure many things, but the time that families and communities invest in children is invaluable. Giving kids a sense of fitting in, of feeling good about themselves, and giving them the opportunities to succeed will really prepare kids for the life ahead of them.” Recent statistics have shown that there are 360,000 births per day, 15,000 births each hour, 250 births each minute, 4 births every second of every day equates to more than 131.4 million births per year. That means there are twice as many parents all over the world and probably just as many grandparents. “Our aim is to shatter the…

In South Africa you often hear negative stories coming out of areas such as Atlantis. Gangsterism, drug abuse, unemployment and poverty seem to be the narrative of these communities. While we cannot deny that there are many negative matters to report on, we believe that more must be done to highlight the positive. Established in 1970 by the South Africa Apartheid Government, Atlantis has been riddled with disappointment due to the withdrawal of subsidies to businesses in the area. In addition to this, unemployment, lack of housing and crime along with other major development challenges all paint a gloomy picture for what was once an established industrial town. Yet within the community of Atlantis is a couple who made the decision to clean up the area where they live. Mr and Mrs Kepie started with the planting of one tree and through focus and diligence it expanded into a wonderful…

According to the Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA), despite the backdrop of significant volatility across all investment markets during 2014, South African private equity funds continued to offer relatively strong performances. Particularly pleasing for private equity investors is the reported overall headline return for the ten years to December 2014 of 19.1%, which outperformed major listed-market indices for the same period, including the FTSE/JSE All…

Why is there an urgent need for sustainability and low impact living? The current gas supply shutdown in Europe harks back to the time of the oil embargoes of the early 1970’s. As demonstrated by these events, the continued non-sustainable “business as usual” model of global governments & power utilities etc., are deliberately ignoring the fragile dependency on non-renewable power generation capacities and perpetuating this non-viable model to the present day. In the South African context, the ongoing focus on fossil fuel power generation, coupled with a slow development of additional non-renewable power generation capacities, have led to the perfect storm of load shedding, bringing with it the very real possibility a national grid collapse at any time. Presently the SA economy has an immediate need for additional power generation capacities, which cannot be met reliably in the short term by existing power production methods. Further to this factor. there…
